However, Apple and O2 have lost in the region of £100,000,000 for the phones that are unlocked. By unlocking them straight out of the box they will lose even more.

Apple have been made a laughing stock by the hackers, they said it would take over a month to unlock 1.1.2, 3 days late, you know the rest.
The only way Apple will release this unlocked is if they put the the price up considerably.
O2 pay Apple £9 per month per phone on the network, this is exclusivity money, all iPhone deals from O2 and AT&T come attached with a 2 year contract, so, for this phone to come out Unlocked, the price will in some way rise.
