There is Government commitment to Post Codes in Ireland as elimination of missed deliveries and route and load maximisation are key parts of reducing the carbon footprint of the transport sector - taking full benefit of SatNav's and GIS/Route planning applications. Furthermore, the postal market will be liberalised in Ireland in 2010 and the current delivery model of a postman on a route familiar wth all the inhabitants will rapidly be diluted.
That is why PON Codes which are a geographic Post Code system have been developed to aid maximum use the necessary technologies and and support a unique code for most properties in Ireland. Full details here:

Anyone can create a PON code for any location that they are familiar with and they can find on the web map provided or if they have the Lat/long for it - all at no cost. PON codes calculated under the Non Domestic section are for businesses etc and business details are the made available to other websites making a business location and contact details widely visible on the web.
