Many people pre-sell items on eBay and use PayPal as their primary payment method.
I sold 100 iPods last year through eBay and received over £12k into my PayPal account within a 3 day period.
Now you'd be thinking what a stupid thing to do. Well it actually wasn't, because I'd done exactly the same thing 3 months previously but with JBL speakers and not iPods.
The final values of the auctions of both items was around the same, give or take £10.
The only difference with the two was that I had the speakers on hand and was able to deliver them out right away. PayPal watched my eBay feedback over the next couple of days and saw that all was well, so they didn't freeze my account.
However, with the iPods, PayPal decided to freeze my account within 1 week of me receiving the £12k..purely because they thought there was potential fraud. I called PayPal to explain the situation saying I needed the funds to pay my supplier. This is where they told me to fax the supplier's details and any relevant invoices in to see if there actually was a supplier.
This could explain PayPal's need for supplier's details, although I still think it is a totally ridiculous way of verifying a seller, but seems to work for them!
