Default Does anyone know anything about building a database website?

Does anyone know anything about building a database website?

Before I go any further let me make sure that i am even attempting to describe the correct thing.

My backround of website building isnt much at all i know my way around macromedia flash, photoshop, and dreamweaver a little bit but nothing to the capacity of what I am attempting to do.

I am trying to establish or find the correct way to go about building a website that has thousands of products all of which the prices could change according to live currency rates.

Not that the sites prices would have to change live, but they would all need to be updated either bi weekly, weekly, or monthly.

Basicly let me break it down, I have multiple suppliers sending me pricelists daily in MS excell documents, I take those files and apply them to a formula which gives me my sale prices.

The real question I am facing is... Is it possible to set up a website to update all the prices or do i have to pay someone to manually change every single one when they change?

Would the best way to go about doing this be mysql, java, or php ? basicly they all look like a different language to me, but if need be i will find someone to pay to do it correctly just need advice on what the easiest most efficiant method may be?

could really use some members help with more knowledge then myself on this one.

Im pretty sure things like oscommerce have a feature whereby you set prices as ratios between two currencies this would most likely allow you to do what you want. It would most likely mean manually changing the ratio every now and then but it is alot better than having to edit all of your products individually.

I'll double check and gather more info. for you and see what I can dig up.

I think this need to be made in php, myqsl is just open source datebase not program language. You can also do it in java, but mosty people use php this days.
If you dont know anything about programing whit will be a realy hard step for you to learn , it will take you a long time before you will understand it.
In php you can make anything you like.
Try to find if there is any free php script on that whay you need.

Usually the prices I get given in .xls I can add a column next to it...

So if they have a price column

Cost

$
$
$
$

Next to it I add something like Conversion or just £ - Then I have a seperate sheet on that .xls spreadsheet and Label a cell XE (Currency exchange). I then just place a figure in there such as 1.90.

Then I go back to the new column of £ and just do =(the cell of the cost by the supplier)/(teh cell I put the 1.90 in). In English:

The USD price divided by the XE = £ Price.

That gives me the conversion I want and I just paste that down keeping the reference to the XE cell locked.. If at anytime I want to change the rate I just edit the XE cell and everything else changes.

Mind you, I only get a few price lists but its a quick, easy and free method.
