Default Can You Help Me Create a Classfieds Site?

Hello again,

Bascially I want to run my own classifieds website, the only knowledge I have of this so far is that I will need a website first then classifieds software installed to the site. Problem is I dont know where to begin or what to do.

What would be good is if I could get a classifieds website already set up, but they all seem to be really expensive.

Ive been told because I dont know much about website creation that theres not much point in me bothering, but that isnt going to stop me trying, and if i learn a few things along the way then its all good.

If you could post a neewbies guide below or something that would be great, maybe even build me one for free 8-D thanks!

I can do that for you. All I'd ask is that you buy the hosting from me and I'll install Noah's Classifieds for free. That is just the basic installation, you would need to enter all the data. If you need help with the initial setup, I'll do it for a reasonable fee, but the basic install would be free.

Here's a link to Noah's site so you can see if that will work for you -

My hosting for a single site like that is as low as $ 4.49 per month - $ 53.88 a year. You can pay quarterly, but it costs more per month.

Here's a link on the hosting and to order - http://www.affordablehoster.com/mini_site.html

That has got to be the worst advice ever, if you do not wish to take the above offer just ensure that the host you choose has fantastico as part of the cpanel and you will be able to install Noah with a couple of clicks for free(again just the standard)

Don't just take Noah, look around to see what meets your needs and go with the one best suited to them, most are super easy to install and come with walkthrough instructions. Most hosts will help with any technical issues you may face to.

Don't get to concerned at this stage with bandwidth and server storage space as you will require only a little initially, obviously ensure your host can develop this as your site grows, once installed then have a play to learn the software and the tweaks required to make it your own. Install it on a subdomain or even a subpage which again as long as the host you use has enough database allowance is very easy to do with fantastico (couple of clicks)

Play, learn, develop your site and launch...

That really is the only way to learn tbh....

Feel free to ask any advice, sure someone can offer the solution. Most software packages also have support functions/forums anyway that will also help...

Mike, I'm surprised at and disappointed in your response. (well, not really 'cos it's understandable)

There are a thousand and one ways outside of some specific web interface application this can be achieved by. It'd be a doddle for anyone who understands PHP, perl, ruby, rails and others to write a web-gui interface that could serve as an input interface to do that, local or remote input, and there are probably a thousand more scripts on, e.g., Hotscripts among others which would do a good job.

The really crucial aspects are a well constructed database for the purpose and a well scripted querying application, whether bespoke or off the shelf. They could feed off existing sites and databases or be unique.

If anyone wants to get a real handle on this, I can recommend several very good books and web references. Unless you have very deep pockets, however, I would venture to suggest that direct lessons would be beyond reach.

Whatever are you talking about. There is a perfectly good, free script with fantastico, why not use it?

Why reinvent the wheel? Noah virtually self-installs and does the job.

Not everyone wants or needs to understand the underying code to setup and use a website. Most care not to, just as few build their own cars.

And a thousand others. Point well made Pete. But why that one in particular?

Well said, also the OP mentioned a "set up" site at which point Pete replied with his service and I replied answering this query in terms that the OP was looking for. Would someone come onto a wholesale site and then expect to be given programming advice??
Most of what you suggest is way out of my league and I have some web experience, whereas the OP mentions they have none....
