My idea for a new product website
Hello to all. I recently purchased the domain razorshop.com.au The site is not up yet.
The site will sell razor blades (Gillette) in Australia and possibly with global shipping. I then plan to add additional products like electic shavers and other male skin care, shave care products.
At the moment I only have an Australian supplier for Gillette blades, which I can only sell at fairly low profit margins of about 20%.
I was wandering wheather I should add google adwords to my site or if this would make the site look cheap? I would appreciate comments and ideas about this business, thank you.

I'm trying to understand a little more about google adwords. I have heard that the average hits to click rates is about 3%. And that the average price per click, if you can get attractive links is about $1 per click. Do these figures seems accurate?
Also is google adwords the best way to go with online ad revenue?

I think you mean Google AdSense.
In which case, personally, I wouldn't have ad's on a store. You will be directing potential customers to your competitors sites.

But you can check the google ad's on your store, and make sure that they're not your competitors, but rather stores selling complementary goods. You can do this can't you?

Watch out for fake razor blades! Have you checked the quality?

Yes I'm buying from a registered Proctor and Gamble supplier, I got the supplier by talking to Proctor and Gamble's national sales manager in Sydney.
The only problem is the prices are quiet high and my profit margins will only be around 20%. So I'm making very little for each sale. My idea is to use the large base of customers who use Gillette products and draw them to other skin care and shave care products that are more expensive and have better profit margins.
I have not yet secured suppliers for these other products, but I believe I can do so. I'm attracted to generating revenue through google adsense initially, because as my initial profits margins are low, I don't believe I'll make that much money to start with.

I don't believe you can select the advertisers. If you could, a lot of the sites I've seen wouldn't be showing the adverts I've seen on them. How much is it likely to be worth as a revenue stream? I don't know because I haven't used them. I like my customers, and my customers' customers, to focus on what the site is selling. I feel that type of thing is more for sites like this, where the main revenue stream is from third party advertising.
If razor blades are the key to getting visitors, why restrict yourself to one manufacturer? I would have thought that offering a choice would bring more visitors, as well as offering the possibility of improved margins.

Well Gillette does have a virtual monopoly in the razor blade market. The only other company is schick, which has a very small portion of the market, and yet I'll try to find supplies for that as well.

many Australians have visited UK, Europe and other parts of the world. They at least will have become used to some of the brands available here. Why not talk to some of the manufacturers to see if they would supply samples for you to introduce their brands into Oz and test the market for them?
If it works, and I have nothing to indicate whether it will or not, that would almost certainly be a great driver of visitors to the site. Little need, then, to advertise your competitors.
