The end results are about the same. And even the free version of CubeCart can cost you money if you want to customize it, where most of the modifications for OSC are free.
But out of the box, CubeCart is much easier to use, and much simpler to setup and get selling with.
Example - Want a new category in CC? enter it. Want one in OSC? enter it, then preview it, then approve it. New product in CC? Enter it. New product in OSC? Enter it, preview it, than add it. Repeat 100 times and you're done in a couple hours with CC and a couple of days with OSC.
And it's not just adding stock. The entire process with OSC is way more time consuming. And more confusing. Again, end results are about the same, but for someone just starting, CubeCart is the easiest.
I offer both. In fact I've just started promoting a line of pre-built sites, including some using OSCmax, which to me is better than CREloaded. Here's a couple of samples -

And while I do have a few clients with the newer, paid for, version of CubeCart, most still use the free V3. Even those who want to make a change or two end up with a one-time cost of under $ 100.
I do the base installs free. My hosting runs about $ 5 per month, depending on how you pay. I've got about 50 or so forum members as clients and treat them all as friends and individuals, holding their hands to get them going. But also giving them a bit of a boot to get them on their way to doing it themselves.
