Default Can Anyone Recommend A Reputable Site Where I Can Purchase A Domain Name

Hi everyone, i am looking to set up a website and need to purchase a domain naompanies offering them for as little as £2.99, this seeems great but im unsure whether i should go ahead, i already have someone who will design my site so please no offers to do this as it will be a waste of time, im just after a little advice, there are companies offering the name for £45 and you get a whole list of things for the year free, do i need someone to host the site? im not really sure how it works

123 is fine. Make sure you buy from a direct domain seller like 123. DO NOT buy anything else from them.

DO NOT buy any cheap deals with hosting companies, they will tie you up in knots and you'll find "your" domain is not really yours.

I don't care if you host with me or not. (We'll I do, but it has nothing to do with what I'm telling you.) Buy your domain from a domain seller. Get your hosting elsewhere. Simple as that.

All those deals have strings attached. You can host with me for as little as $ 4.49 per month and be the master of your own fate. Others here may offer even lower prices. No deals, just plain hosting you can depend on. And help if you need it.

One last note on the website question: do not go for 123-reg, they crash all the time. Try one like 1and1.

As for the business bank account: you will need to check their policy. Some will let sole traders some will not. If they ask for a VAT registration number you can often put something like "not vat registered" and still get the account.

Personally I use www.ukreg.com which is the domain selling side of www.fasthosts.co.uk

I've used them since about 2000 and support has always been helpful on the couple of occasions I've needed them, normally problems with a previous host when transferring a domain in, and the support is in the UK.

Again, do not get sidetracked on this. Domain registration is one thing, hosting something else again.

Do not do both with the same company, as they have a tendency to "hold you hostage" by making it hard to leave / transfer / do what you want.

Personally, I hear more negative about 1and1 than 123. All you are doing is registering your name, a once a year (or every two years with .co.uk) transaction. You set your name servers one time and you never deal with them again. It's not a big deal, just don't get sucked into all the other crap they try and sell you.

Frankly, if you don't mind wading through about 8 pages of sales gimmicks, you can do as well with GoDaddy as any. It's a minefield of newbie-sucking offers that you want to avoid, but they are quick and you can leave any time with a click of your mouse. You'll have to say No, take me to the Checkout a number of times, but they are good at domains.

Also, do not "try out" domains on any of these sites, they have been known to get bought up between when you try them out and find they are available and when you come back to buy them. Be ready to buy as soon as you find one you want, don't sleep on it.

Not if he wants a .co.uk domain. most US registrars charge $10/yr for a .uk get it from a UK registrar and it'll be less than half that. £5.90+vat from ukreg for 2 years.
