Arrow Web hosting, do's and dont's?

Hi everyone, was hoping to get a little advice on setting up web hosting. Now Im all familiar with purchasing a domain etc, but when it comes to hosting my site i get a bit lost. Could anyone give me a run down of the process etc. Also any suggestions on hosting companies would be great i.e how much web space and band width are good etc, and the diferences between linux and windows? Im looking to host all my eventual sites, so im not too sure the best way to do this. Cheers

Depends really what your looking to do.

If your selling online and need a cart there are plenty of hosts out there, there is one guy pete do a search on cubecart on here and you will find him. If your selling online and using Paypal then you dont need to really worry about SSL certificates (the little padlock at the top of the screen) this is really if your using payment processors such as HSBC ePDQ etc they insist on SSL's.

With reference to webspace I recently set up my employers website and the cart was 28mb alone including images etc its at nearly 85mb. But there is over 150 pics on the site which is quite alot and they were compressed!!!

It really does depend on what you want to do, if you want a number of sites on your webspace all selling or one selling and the rest just info sites etc.

In terms of platforms Linux or MS we use linux with Plesk for database creation creating webaddresses etc not a fan of Cpanel but Cpanel does have Fantastico with one click installs for Shopping carts etc etc.

Why not post exactly it is your looking to do and I am sure someone can offer advice? I know people have helped me in the past!!!!!

Hi I can provide you with hosting at a great price. Examples can be found here but I am willing to offer TWF forum members lower prices on these.

All my hosting packages including the following FREE: http://www.uvhosting.co.uk/included.html

I have some work to do on the site at the weekend as we have set up a new customer centre so online quick set up won't be online till Monday.

As for advice; Linux servers in the past have been known to perform better BUT advances have been made on Windows servers and the difference between the two is debatable. I use windows servers and have not experienced problems. The reason I use window servers is because I use a different control panel to CPanel. I have had very good feed back on our control panel. You can demo it here: http://extendcp.com/index.cgi

You can think of web space as a hard drive because that's all it is. Bigger sites need bigger web space. For new companies I would advise starting at the basic packages and paying for more as you need it. Good hosts can upgrade your web space without effecting your site.

Band width is important if you are getting a lot of traffic on a site and you have files like product brochures etc for people to download. Again there is no problem starting on a basic package and working your way up as you reach your limits.

If you are interested in our packages please feel free to PM me and I will offer you a better deal.
All domains can be purchased through ourselves or transfered to us for hosting. Unfortunatly as we are constantly increasing our capacity IP's do change so we do not allow DNS pointing. UK domains can be transfered free of charge. .com / .net domains come with a small charge but this will also give you a longer registration on your domain.

EDIT: Additional Information

*We have many trusted clients and will be in this for the long run.
*Our shopping carts can be installed very easily by you all you need to do is choose a username and password and the rest is done automatically. This also means you can change your mind and install something else or reinstall very easily. If you check out the what's included or the demo control panel you will see the carts available.

Hi There,

I offer hosting on either a Windows or a Linux server, it would then be a simple case of using an FTP program to upload your sites to the server and pointing the domains to them. If you want assistance or pricing then feel free to PM me. My company has been running for years now, we're not just another host that's going to disappear.

About 50 TWF members host with me. The main reason, I would say, is that I give them one on one service before the sale. Many are weeks and sometimes months, back and forth emailing what about this and that.

I'll hold your hand through the process and install any shopping cart you would like at no cost for the installation. My rates are about the best you will find, from $ 4.49 per month. If you intend to have a number of sites, I offer hosting for 6 domains as low as $ 9.49 per month.

If you want to sell goods online you simply choose a cart, enter your products, set you shipping rates and enter you PayPal account info and you are on the way. I suggest using CubeCart, since it is the easiest and fastest to get selling with. I have had clients report sales their first or second day online, before they are even finished the initial setup.

You can contact me by email at pete at smallbusinesshoster dot com and I'll be glad to go as deeply into detail as you wish.

OK WTF is going on here. Some guy offered me $9.99/month offering 100mb disk space and 1000mb monthly bandwidth. Im so glad i have not paid him yet. Embarrassingly to say, i think i almost got ripped off.

It doesn't mean they are trying to rip you off. If they have a very good reliable server then that isn't such a bad price.
