Hi all,

Can anyone please advise ?

I've just received some email attachments which contain Excel
Spreadsheet XLS files. I've downloaded them but I can't open
them because I haven't got the right software.

Where would be the best place to go ?

I've looked at the microsoft website and download.com, but I'm
not quite sure what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance from a computer dunce.

Leo

You are looking for Microsoft Excel. It's part of the MS Office suite.

On an Apple Mac it can also be opened with AppleWorks and the built-in Dataviz MacLink translator.

Windoze has a gazillion programs available so there MUST be something (free) that will open it!

If you are using MS Works, you can open an Excel spreadsheet. Save the email attachment to your hard drive. Open the Works spreadsheet, select File/Open and at the bottom of the dialog box, where it says Files of Type, select Excel.

If you don't use Works, get Open Office - it's free and will open all Microsoft documents. www.openoffice.org

Thanks for the replies - they're much appreciated.

I've followed the advice and managed to open the files.

Thanks again.

Propriatory file formats are what Windows is all about.

CSV, RTF and PNG are certainly going to feature in the future if Linux gains more ground!

Personally I had the same problem,

Go on the microsoft download page and download "Excel Viewer" this will allow you to open all "excel" documents and, erm, view them!? I dont think you can edit an excel document with this "viewer" program. It is available for free.
Another option, and what I did was download "microsoft Office" package on a free 60 day trial from the same site, then you get excel, powerpoint, word etc and you can read and edit any documents till your hearts content?!!

Hope this helps.
