Sounds to me like your friend's email account has been hacked and someone is sending emails from it. Get them to check their sent messages and see if there are loads to their whole address book.
p.s. this can happen when their pc is infected with malware or a virus. My mother-in-law's hotmail randomly decided to send her address book and email with a link to a virus which then does the same thing to the recipient's hotmail. I had great fun sorting that one out!
I get similar emails all the time from people I know in Thailand, they have never sent the emails. It is embedded in OE as a trojan/virus/bomb call it what you will.
