eg. you could ask him/her to call you and ask them details about their products and factory. and let them supply some certifications issued by chinese officials. and you could search the similar information by google or other searching engine to see if anyone has already dealed with them or been cheated. because it is very easy to advise on B2B now.
i think you should order small amount goods at the first deal, and use the safest payment such as L/C. otherwise, you will not only feel frustrated, but lose the faith to deal with chinese, and also lose many opportunities to open another big market.

Sorry it seems a little late, I have just registered to the site...
I was just wondering, if someone is a scammer, do you think it will be so difficult to produce a fake certification as well?
Also I wouldn't consider the L/C or any other "the safest" payment. If you receive fakes or rubbish, there is nothing you can do, apart from taking the scammer to court.
