If customs do not open the container then they have no way of knowing unfortunately. Also these stories tend to 'exaggerate' the figures.

Yes, it makes them look good to use high values.

And they've got the ports so automated that they drive the containers through a device and if they don't find any nuclear bombs everything is OK.

When seeing one of those container ships coming into the harbor, you have to wonder how they could possibly check all those containers, let alone every box within the containers. If they aren't tipped off, it's just be chance that they find something.

I once had a US client(his wife actually) asked me to consolidate some LV or other brand named bags into his container. I asked if the container was seized of smuggling countefeit products, who will take the responsibility and cover the loss of the whole container? I rebuffed his wife's requests.
