However that never tends to match when you come to buying goods/services.

Number one problem with currency exchange? Paypal. They put their commission on the rate, and you end up paying over the odds. Best bet is to do bank transfer with a dedicated currency trader regulated by the FSA. You will find that over a certain amount, your fees are zero for the transfer. you tend to get a better than over the counter rate when you transfer.... and I transfer pounds rather than the local currencies so the UK bank does not use their rate... this is obviously from a UK perspective.
