For anyone considering the markets just to put you at ease, never met any except competitors who are unfriendly, and you get to meet some real characters.

I used to stand next to Mr Shah from Leicester who sold clothing, mainly coats, and he was as clever a fellow as you could hope to meet. In 1980 he came second in the mastermind quiz on the BBC, when the London Taxi driver Fred Housego won in the final with the specialist knowledge on the history of the Tower of London, 1275 to 1945.

Mr Sahh was beaten by just two points, his specialist round was Anoraks, 9.99 to 19.99.
