Hello,
Lyle and Scott is becoming much more popular nowadays which means that there is an increasing amount of fake products. Some of the fakes I have seen are very 'good' and could easily be passed on as genuine.
I recently bought some fake products which frustrated me, so i decided to make this guide for you, so you don't get scammed.
This is for the 'Vintage' range Polo shirts. (The most commonly faked)
Please note that all information has been sourced from personal experience and various guides on the internet.
I also have been researching this topic as part of my business studies course at college.
1) The polo collar on fake products is normally much larger than the real thing. The quality of it is also much poorer - normally bits fraying off the corners and the feel is much thinner.
2) The tags are the hardest thing to spot. On real Lyle and Scott polo’s they are a dark black booklet - where the quality of the card is much higher.
Here are some pictures : (From an eBay guide)
The colour is noticeably darker.
3) The Logo can be the obvious tell tale of a fake product. It should be of high detail and there should be obvious definition of the 'eagle eye'.
The quality is alot different and the size should be about 2.5x2.5 cm.
Id also like to add that, on real polo shirts the logo is sewn ONTO the garment whereas fake ones normally have it sewn into it. This is common for fake Lacoste as well.
4) The buttons should be engraved with 'Lyle and Scott' twice and be smooth. (I.e. no hem, drop)
I also found that the quality of the button is noticeable. When feeling the fake, it just feels like a cheap plastic however the real polo has a oily chunky feel.
5) Button hole. When looking at the fake polo I found that the hole where the button goes through is much larger than the button - meaning it slips out easily. It is not sewn up either with rough cut edges.
6) I tested out the washing of a fake polo myself. After a few washes it becomes rough and hard when touched. It also shrinks slightly showing that the quality of material is much less than it should be.
7) The label should state 'Lyle & Scott Vintage' with the size label directly underneath. The label should be in the centre line of the polo (Fakes sometimes have them off centre) and the size label centre of the 'Vintage' Label.
8) There should be quality stitching and no bits of thread or loose stitches hanging off or on the polo.
9) Washing label should look like this:
