What caught my attention was the $800 for an iPhone in the US if not through a carrier. And people expect to get them for $300?

I agree with you. When people hear about wholesale iphones, they believe that because they are being sold in mass quantities, they will be sold for dirt cheap. Any legitimate distributor that handles iphones can't afford to sell you iphones for $300 because it costs more than $300+ to manufacture one.
