Personally, I never do this. I can't remember where, but I read it isn't good for SEO at all. Your site will get indexed if you get a reasonable number of links anyway.

As a bare minimum you should have the url (anchor text of course) in your signature on here, the spiders hit every day and that will start the index ball rolling. If it was a pre made site then assume it was recieving hits unless t was a pre made bought out the box then you will face the sand box for a while and should get working immediately..

I'm new and learning from some of the old posts in here. So please forgive my ignorance.

Above when you speak of good links, are you referring to placing links of similar companies (competition) on your site? Like a link exchange?

It's not quite that easy, unless you are referring to a top ranking based on your URL name as opposed to a key term such as drop shipping, gift drop shipping etc. Unless you have a massive advertising/viral presence the likelihood that they search for you by your name is small so the relevance of being at the top of the serps for your name is minimal. Concentrate in getting the basics right, some tips can be found at Website Tips and Article List.

Links are key, link exchanges are not really that good from a serps position but are good from a traffic position if utilised correctly, do some reading and then ask some specifics and we will help...it is possible to get high ranks in competitive markets (I am in position 2 for Ebay Forum, I was in position 1 above Ebay themselves before I took the eye of the ball and adjusted for recent algo changes!!!)

Get as many links from sites related to your web site's theme. (Links are counted as votes)

The more the links, the more frequently your store gets spidered or crawled.

Validate your website HTML code. Good HTML leads to easy navigation as search engine spiders read the html only.

If you are having database URLs use the rewrite URL module.

The rest is on-page optimization.
