well start with submitting your site to search engines and getting links on site which are already being crawled by search engines, such as forums signitures, this will get you in to search engines quicker. Then i recommend SEO, so that you can have a higher listing in search engines.
Search google, and you should find more information on SEO, and you can always pay a company to do this for you.
You can use google adwords, but can work out expensive. I recommend experimenting with adwords and see if it works for you.
paying to have banners placed on sites that link to your site.

Its hard enough to get one domain indexed with the search engines let alone 4 or 5.
Get one good domain and work on SEO for it

Exchanging links is a good idea. Make sure you target the right site though.

There are many ways to get your site found.
I receive around 200 unique hits per day without advertising.
Broken down into percentages.
Word of mouth 5% , treat people well and they will come back or tell others.
Links to other sites 15% Trade links with only relevant sites, google don't like sites that link with any old site, one way links are better than reciprocal, but a reciprocal link is o.k. Never link with bad sites, badly run, poorly put together...etc
Links in sigs on forums 10%, again my link is below, it would be far better if this site was relevant to its content but it can do me no harm. I do also go on forums that are relevant and receive decent traffic this way.
Write articles 10% this is easy for me as I have a good knowledge of the subject, it can be harder depending on the sites subject, but it is a good way of getting one way links and free traffic.
My about me page in ebay 5% If you have a product to sell, create an about me page with a link to your website. Google index it and anyone who reads your about me page will possibly visit your site.
Leaflets unknown percentage, but does help. With every sale pop in a thank you slip with your web details on and in my case I created a poster/leaflet for people to place in certain places, anything that you think may help people find you. Too many people build sites and expect people to come to them, you really have to work at it.
Search engines around 40%. I had a very good teacher regarding seo techniques and my whole site is geared around getting a very good place in google for my subject. In fact if you put anxiety in google I am around 41st out of 58 million sites, the only ones above me are charity and well known medical sites. But what you need to do is look for keyword phases when first setting up a site, I maybe 41st for anxiety but I am on the first page for many keyword phrases like 'anxiety explained' number 2, 'anxiety help and advice' bottom of first page.
It is not often that people put a search into google for one word, if you sell playstaions, they may put in 'Latest playstaion 3 for sale in u.k' key phrases are as important as keywords and you also cut down the competion.
Google love
1.Plenty of information, they want to give the customers the best sites, information is a good start and a site that is updated on a regular basis. When a site becomes dormant google can begin to drop it down the rankings.
2. Professional sites with good spelling and grammar, again yes google can penalise bad spelling and grammar, so put it through spell checker, not only this but any customers who may drop on you, will soon leave if it is poorly put together. Get a privacy policy, good grammar, make sure all links are working. google love it and so do customers, I would not risk giving my details to a site that looked shoddy.
3. Get links. Google more than the other search engines like links. But don't link with bad sites. Google love one way links as it shows someone giving you credit and you not just swapping links to keep it happy. Good links to good relevant sites is the key, don't try getting 30 links in a day, and build it up slowly. Reciprocal ones wont harm you but don't hold as much weight. Add your site to directories, put you sig in a forum, write an article, all these are considered one way links. The better and higher ranked site you link with, the more kudos google gives you.
4. Don't try and cheat google and treat it as a friend. Google is not stupid and will penalise sites who try and cheat the system.
Don't cram your meta tags box with keywords that are not included in your text.
Don't put keywords in text on your page with the same colour text to hide there presence.
Don't cram your pages with keywords, your page title and description need to be informative and include keywords and phrases you are looking to use. But don't cram the whole page with keywords, around 3/4 in your text is fine, but it must read right and not come across as spammy.
Do create a good title and make it as informative as possible, put in h1 headers where needed. Also write a good relevant description and have good relevant titles. Add alt tags to your pictures that are relevant. Highlight particular words in bold, so people can skim and see what they are looking for. Also very important is link your inner pages, if you mention the word dvd's and you have a page that is relevant or a page where you are selling them, make sure you hyperlink it, look after your inner pages like you do your home page.
There is a lot more but basically keep a well run site, watch your spelling and grammar. Have the information that people are looking for. Don't have a title that just says your website name. i.e Acorn Games
It should be Acorn Games. Suppliers of playstaions, x-box 360, gamecube, games and consoles. Then this should be in your title and your description and in the text. Hyperlink some of these words in your text.
My site is only 8 months old and is getting very good search engine and other traffic because I followed the advice above. You really do get what you put in. Google is changing all the time and may change its tactics, but most of the advice will stand the test of time.
