I'd class it as a bit weird but it depends on their thoughts, say if they desperatly want it then they may welcome the email.

firstly thank you matt

hmm in some case's there 30 odd people bidding for 1 thing,
and i'm sure majority want the item, however i know what
you mean by weird (lol like a stalker) kinda apprehensive
dont want people to get the wrong impression or for them to
think i'm a scammer

They may also think you are desperate to sell the procuct, which means they would be scared off or less pasionate about bidding, possibly resulting in a lower sale price or lower reputation in their eyes

I would class it as spam.

What's more important, I think eBay would treat it as spam if you were reported. They have approved ways of advertising your other auctions and items for sale, within the auction page itself.

I don't do eBay, never have sold and have bought an occasional older computer part or credit card terminal at the rate of once a year. So, I'm far from an expert.

Put in my many years on the forums, I have read of the practice often and this is the first thread I've seen suggesting not to do it.

I have no idea how eBay looks at it, but I would suggest finding out for sure what ther position is, as it does seem a good source for additional sales.

Along the same lines, there are now several companies that specialize in contacting people who have abondoned their shopping carts. These are "phone bank" sorts of companies who contract with large retailers to followup on their abandoned carts.

It's been awhile since I read the article in a trade mag, but the sales completion rate of 15% comes to my mind. It may have even ben higher, but I'm sure it was at least 15% closed sales as a result of followup.

I know people do contact losing bidders. How legal it is in eBay's eyes I don't know, but I'd check with them to be sure.

thanks guys

i think i wont pursue it, probably got more to lose than gain,
plus when they search for items mine is on their aswell

just thought 'd be more pro-active
(will stick to the old fashion way of building a rep on quality goods and excellent customer service)
