So if someone else owned ebay would their fees be free?

i'm afraid you fail to understand the logic behind this argument.
Anyway the whole point is, ebay is anti-competitive. It retricts fair trade, ive experienced this in many ways. Ebay is a business afterall, and the aim of any business is to maximise profits sustainably. And while there is no competitor out there that can get close to ebays popularity, it will continue to do as it likes.

Take two steps back and ask yourself why there is no decent competitor.

No one is forced to sell on ebay, it's your choice.

My apologies.... my paypal information is obviously a little rusty.... the last time I used it links were provided for websites but on clicking the links it took you away from the site to paypal site and used their security.... which I didnt like so I never used it myself.

There is no decent competitor because basically no one else jumped on the auction bandwagon soon enough and now all the other sites are trying to catch up. But now because they are so big its the chicken & the egg syndrome. Buyers won't leave ebay because all the sellers are there selling every product they need at cheap prices and all the sellers won't leave because all the buyers are there. So there you have it ebay will just keep getting bigger & bigger & keep increasing the fees. Just because a company comes up with a good idea, doesn't mean they should be allowed to dominate the market in such a way that no one else can get a look in. As I said in my previous posts it wouldn't be accepted on the high street so why should it be allowed on the internet.

Ebay has been flying now for a good 3 - 5 years, long enough for someone like Microsoft, News International (who tried and failed in the 90's), Google, Tesco, Wallmart etc to take notice and create a rival.

So why do you think they haven't?

People talk like there is no other option but ebay. There is a big wide world out there. As much as I moan about it, it still provides my business with customers and at great value. No one has yet to question the value it provides? All people do is complain about fees.

Imagine your business made £1M a year. Would you feel guilty and slash your prices just so you made £500K instead? Or would you charge an extra £1 per customer and make another £1.2M a year?

Just some scenarios to throw in to the big pot

SO ebay is to blame for their being no competition (which there is)? I think you fail to understand the logic of running a business.

anyway with ebays 38million euros fine, i think the only way is up in terms of fees. I'm annoyed with ebay for letting this happen. As for paypal being the forced option (the only online way) to pay, its anticompetitive and the law should act to stop this.
