There is Government commitment to Post Codes in Ireland as elimination of missed deliveries and route and load maximisation are key parts of reducing the carbon footprint of the transport sector - taking full benefit of SatNav's and GIS/Route planning applications. Furthermore, the postal market will be liberalised in Ireland in 2010 and the current delivery model of a postman on a route familiar wth all the inhabitants will rapidly be diluted.

That is why PON Codes which are a geographic Post Code system have been developed to aid maximum use the necessary technologies and and support a unique code for most properties in Ireland. Full details here: http://www.irishpostcodes.ie/findoutmore.php

Travel related websites in Ireland are now also adopting PON codes - see here: http://www.travelshopireland.com/fea...re-centre.html

Anyone can create a PON code for any location that they are familiar with and they can find on the web map provided or if they have the Lat/long for it - all at no cost. PON codes calculated under the Non Domestic section are for businesses etc and business details are the made available to other websites making a business location and contact details widely visible on the web.

Yes you are correct regarding your Postman- but An Post is not the only ones who deliver goods or services in Ireland. The fact that a semi state body does not use a PostCode does not mean that one does not exist or is not needed. The article here explains all this: http://www.directionsmag.com/article..._id=2897&trv=1

So PON Codes -a geographic form of Post Codes do exist in Ireland contrary to your statement!

Did you read the article at the link in my last Post - there is an example of an address with PON Code shown. Here's the link again:
http://www.directionsmag.com/article..._id=2897&trv=1

Furthermore, when filling web purchase forms it can be entered there also -

so the Viallge Inn in Partry, Claremorris, Co Mayo has KTQ 02F3 as its PON Code - you can go to this link - enter the code and see where it is exactly on a web map: http://www.irishpostcodes.ie/ponc/poncviewl.php

also it can be entered by a courier into a SatNav and be navigated to the door!

Hope this helps..
