I have had a eBay personal account for several years now, which I have used to sell bits around the house whenever they are not needed etc.

This past Xmas I sold some stuff at profit, and was informed that I needed to change the account to a business acount, since I was making profit from sales - which was understandable.

Since Xmas, due to the fees (which I think are getting out of control) I have no longer used the account for business. I have used the account to sell the odd item I have at home, and wish to get rid of - just like I used to do before.

Since I no longer use the account for business, I contacted eBay and informed them that I would like the account turned back to a private/personal account.
They contacted me back and said it was not possible.

So my only option is to create a new account for personal use - but since I no longer sell through business, does this mean all the feedback I acquired in previous years from selling my own private stuff is now useless, and I have to start all over again?

Yes, new account = 0 feedback.

I've read that after a while (probably a month or two) with no or very low sales your business account which automatically change back to a personal. Never seen it happen though.

Not really sold anything - just the odd 1 or 2 things - since Xmas.
Emailed eBay about 2 weeks ago explaining the situation, but they said they wouldnt do it.

Then there's nothing you can do about it really. If eBay says they won't do it - they won't do it.

Just open a new account.

Well I know you probably don't want to be spending money but if you open a new account and buy a few things you need from it then you'll hopefully have your good ratings back in no time. Obviously not as many but you won't look like a newbie and if you sell a few items as well then you can recoup a bit of what you're spending. It's up to you though, sorry to hear about ebay not changing back your account though.
