Default Re: Ebay competitor

If there's a competitor who's successful Ebay is likely to buy it.

I've always got the impression that Ebay wasn't very succesful in the Netherlands. There you have a website (Marketplace, if I would translate it). That one is quite successful and it's completely free.

Guess what Ebay did... Some time ago they bought it. I don't know what's the meaning of it. The site is completely free to list. The only thing Ebay did was integrate PayPal in it.

Advertising would be a good solution for eBid. Their sellers seriously outweigh the buyers on there. The only people who seem to know of eBid is people like us, trying to find an alternative stream.

I personally think eBay is far too big for anyone to compete, at the moment. They are going towards more corporate clients, almost becoming a search engine for items in essence from big name stores.

eBid would be great if they had far more security for the consumer, but also take all the good bits from eBay, past and present, for example, 'Shops'. eBay are trying to get rid of shops and hiding them in favour of 'Outlets', eBid should encourage more 'shops' on their site, to help small businesses.

But I guess another major factor for eBid not doing so well is their awful domain name. Naturally you would type in www.ebid.com/.co.uk, but it's www.uk.ebid.net. They really need that simple domain, as eBid is a good name in iteself.

Thanks, Darren

I think the only thing that will be able to come along and compete with eBay is a tech giant, along the lines of Google, Microsoft, Apple, something like that. Thats the only way they would get the media coverage, budget deep enough to cover a project so vast, and a new/unique concept to drive traffic from eBay. Smaller companies just dont have a chance. However I think the chances of a serious competitor to eBay go up each day, as the Internet becomes the dominant sales environment, other companies will want to cash in.
