Search Engine Listing
What is the best way of listing my website on a search engine. I would like to list it on as many as possible.
I have seen that some companies charge to put you on the search engines and othes are free but more difficult to do.

You can submit to google, yahoo and msn for free...they're the only ones you need really.

No need to submit, as the quickest way of getting indexed in SE's is to build links with people who's sites are already indexed in the SE's, so when your site is ready start contacting webmasters to exchange links!

Agreed! - Don't submit your site but market it instead by
- Getting links to your site (as mentioned above)
- Article marketing
- Start a blog and mention your site in it. you can get a free blog at blogger & your site will quickly be indexed.

Actually, it's much easier than people try to make out. Here's my secret recipe for FULL registration with Google in just 5 days:
Complete web site (no "under construction" notices!) as far as possible. Google doesn't care about meta key words so you can include them or not.
Make sure your site has plenty of visible content. (If you use frames, the page text and links may not be visible to search engines). Include a nonsense word like jihyterplop which produces No results when you search for it using Google.
Add a suitable link to your new site from any/all existing sites to which you have access.
Link each page to the next page with relevant linking text. In other words, a page about shoes should have a link to it from a phrase that includes "shoes" on another page.
Make and upload your Google sitemap.xml file.
Register the sitemap.xml file with Google.
Google will visit your site within a few hours at most. You'll see this in your log file.
Google will visit your site again a few days later - usually 2 or 3 - and will register any pages it missed the first time. This is a good time to add a few more pages and links for Google to see the next time it visits (2 - 3 days). Google loves to see an actively growing site. Your site should now be fully indexed by Google. Test by searching for your silly "jihyterplop" word and other phrases that can be found on your site.
Continue to "grow" your site over the following weeks and get as many incoming links as you can. Add some relevant outgoing links. Your PR will gradually increase over the next year.

I forgot to add that once Google has indexed your site, many other search engines will also pick it up without your needing to do anything more.

Oscommerce is a shopping cart script. You make a sitemap file for a web site.

osCommerce is a website template that offers shopping cart features. I have had a read about this system and it seems effective.

Yes, but what Martin is saying is that a Google sitemap can only (as far as I know) be integrated into a web page. What's the benefit of a Google sitemap for a OsCommerce application anyway?
