Default Postings asking if a website is a scam or not

Hi,

I have been browsing the forums for a while and picked up a lot of good information. I was thinking of the following suggestion to help those that asking the frequent "is such and such a scam" question.

Would it be a good idea when possible for people to list why they think a site is a scam ? Would this educate people regarding what to look for ?

e.g. whois results, price for branded items.

Or would this just create a Scammers guide to what not to do ?

I see a few postings where early on the site has been called a scam only to be confirmed as genuine later on - should someone have to substantiate why they think a site is a scam ?

Regards,

Steve

People are two eager to post SCAM when they do not know the full facts.

Although a majority of sites are either scams or selling counterfeit goods, people should not comment unless they have the full facts. The recent thread on ABLE is a classic case.

I agree Greedy, when I post in those type of threads I try to explain why I would or wouldnt think it is a scam.

In this case I am perfectly willing to say I didnt know that WU had to be to a person and not a company. I have stayed away from WU as a form of payment.

It is on the back of the ABLE thread that I thought about raising this thread - I am picking up things to check but also wary of just saying something is a scam unless I can justify it.

There's a ridiculous amount of scam/legit requests that come in daily, for sites like nikewholesale4444.com selling 100 USD PS3's. Sites like these I'll just put 'scam', I won't waste my time explaining.

This is a good point, sabrads. But, I think D M is on the money. A lot of the sites which pop-up are the blatant scams/ counterfeits i.e: wholesalenike123.com (merely an example). Where its fine to just say "Scam, the site is selling counterfeit clothing" or something along those lines. I agree with what your saying completely, but the above example should be sufficient in my opinion (for a site of that kind). But, where its not so obvious, I think there needs to be more information provided to justify defining a company as scammers. You're right.

Spot on PT,my opinion is that we should have a specific sub category here on the forums (or even just a sticky) with a list of genuine suppliers and if you know that your supplier is honest and upfront and you are willing to share them, then add their name to the list-conversely if they are a scammer create another list with their names on so ppl can check that first before starting a thread..."is so and so a scammer??".....it would save ppl time of repeating the same old question

Hi there,

I'm Rob from Fraudwatchers.Org. You've surely come across many visitors in your forum here that ask wether the offer from this shop at googlenike.com is for real.

If you like, you can point these visitors to the following links:

The trading scams forum: http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/...play.php?f=110
Article "Buying in China" http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/...pg=fw_buychina
A similar sticky in German: http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/...ead.php?t=5561
French forum for these fakers: http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/...play.php?f=138

I'm also the co-creator of these two blog entries:
http://firetrust.com/en/blog/chris/t...-chinese-scams
http://firetrust.com/blog/chris/anat...a-chinese-scam
http://firetrust.com/en/blog/chris/t...-chinese-scams

Currently I'm working with Chris Gleason from Firetrust
on this Scamchecker: http://scamchecker.net

It's not finished yet but it's useable (I guess)

cheers

I spent several years as a moderator of a US forum that was at one time similar to TWF. It changed hands several times and ended up being owned by a fairly large company that let it become a flaming board.

But for some time it was quite good and it had good supplier / bad supplier sections. It was a nightmare. We see it some here, where someone will come on, first post talking about how good a source is. Of course, it's just self-promotion. And many of the negative posts were by competitors. The problems were many and the admin spent hours tracing IP's.

And Robert, while I admire what you are trying to do, the forums and lists from Ripoff Report on are all full of sour grapes, one bad experience from an otherwise good supplier, etc. There is a several day old thread here where someone dug out a single 4 year old post on one of the "whine boards" and used it as an example of a poor company.

I agree that what we have here isn't ideal and I personally smile to myself when someone copies the Whois file (as if anyone can't look themselves), which proves very little. I buy maybe 10 domains a year, but I've been selling online since 2001. But if you look at the site where I just bought the domain yesterday, I'm a crook.

Or if you look at the Whois on a company who has been supplying the royal family for generations but has just this month decided to join the rest of the country by having a website, you would think they were a bunch of pikers.

Sure, take a look, if you want, but don't decide someone is a scammer by their whois date.

And how you can look at a picture (probably "borrowed" from elsewhere) and scream "fake" is beyond me.

If I were to suggest anything it would be to limit replies to actual experiences with the supplier in question. There may be some very reliable, but new to the net, sources who have copied others' images. There are some honest people with poor internet skills with crappy websites. Way too much judging by covers and not enough by content, I'd say.
