I agree. Keep overhead as small as possible for as long as you can. A basement in a home makes a great warehouse, did for me.

What you will find when you trade from a proper location and not from home you will get greater motivation. It's like a proper job and you should treat it the same.

Plus when you have bills to pay, cash becomes king and you will naturally find other avenues to exploit.

Despite running many successful businesses over the last god know how many years I still work a minimum of 9 - 5 everyday (usually 8 - 12 hours!). Never lose sight of that, especially if you are making a lot of money. No skiving off 3 days a week to play golf. Your business is like an athlete, you need to train it every day. Otherwise it will get bloated, slower and not to mention your staff will eventually do the same.

Getting out of home and renting a small office or warehouse - I'd recommend it to any budding businessman and your business will grow 100 times faster.

In fact I am thinking of getting yet another warehouse and splitting up my current warehouse into much smaller warehouse/offices and rent to start up businesses/ebay traders on flexible terms. I aim just waiting for the lovely slow council workers to pull their finger out of their.... and provisionally OK the drawings.

You might want to buy and ship them in small quantity first - a quantity that will cover your shipping and STILL let you have an edge over those that buy single unit locally or order oversea thru online shop/auction.

You might not get the best price at first (due to small quantity)... but that should not be an issue when you start out. Build yur base and working capital using these start-up orders, you can also "test" the capability and trust-worthiness of your supplier, reliability of the shipping company and most probably uncover many unforseen situation.

You really would want to keep your cost low until you are sure and ready (over stocking, renting a place etc is not too great an idea)
