Question Find Suppliers before finding the product?? Whats the theory?

"You should acquire suppliers before you decide on a product to sell"

In other words, do you think that it is more important to find a supplier of any thinkable product, and then see whether it is possible to sell that product, or do you think you should find the product you want to sell, and then find suppliers for that product?

Just an interesting theory I have been thinking about for a few days, and want some thoughts and opinions on...

Anthony

personally i go for a product that i think has a future.by researching the sale rooms/auctions/live tv/childrens fads etc.
then i locate the supplier.
no point talking to a supplier if you dont know yout product before hand, makes you look simple and you will get shafted accordingly.(i have/still am learning this)

Hmmm... No idea lol

The thing is, you can just one day stumble upon a new product..

For example, my art business was a result of stumbling across an art supplier.. on ebay!

I wasnt even looking for art, but it turned out to be a pretty profitable business.

I think a part of it is luck

Just trying to establish whether people prefer to browse looking for suppliers or whether they browse for products.

IE:
Do you find a product and then find suppliers..
or
Do you find suppliers first (ie search for random ideas and see what everyone has to offer until you find something that interests you..)

I hope I am making sense..

Product before supplier for me.....then again I sing the virtues of niche and added values which tends to support this theory.

Supplier lead at the moment but that's because they continually come up with the goods.
