Default Stores raided for fakes About $2 million in counterfeit goods is seized

NEWPORT NEWS - More than 20 retailers are facing felony charges today, after a large raid Wednesday on outlets in Newport News' Peddler's Village.

Police said more than half the stores in the center at 34th Street and Jefferson Avenue had been selling counterfeit goods. Police expect to fill two semitrailers with fakes worth about $2 million collected in an operation that continued into late Wednesday.

The operation involved about 70 people, who included Newport News and Hampton police, Virginia State Police, U.S. postal inspectors, representatives of the music industry, fire inspectors, code and compliance officers, and investigators from Lazer Investigations, a company that works for the private sector.

Whole story -

They had a followup piece in the paper today and lo and behold! There is a mug shot of a guy I sold a point of sale system to about 12 or 15 years ago. Brought back old times.

Question is, what will the police do with it? i mean - usually it would go onto police auctions or something... obviously they're not going to auction off fake goods? Don't tell me they're going to destroy it??? Personally, i think they should ship it out & help all those people without clothing, water e.t.c...

No, it goes to the customs folks, probably. That is a good question.

I'll write to the editor of the paper for a followup. They are good on that sort of thing. I'll do it today.

Good idea.... problems arise when the corruption is as big as it is in some of the affected countries, it finds its way back into the market place again.
