I have just started selling on ebay myself and ALL my auctions are BINs
You are wrong, all your BIN's are listings, not auctions

Learn from your mistake OP, face it, this time it has not been too expensive, so it will pay you well over the years to remember, sell for a profit. Anyone can sell at a loss, making a profit is harder.

You could have lsited a BIN at your competitors price with best offer feature, or simply undercut him 10% etc. All depends how quick you want to turn the stock around, but if it has been a slow seller in the past no reason to expect it to change simply because you are also selling.

I hadnt thought about the Best Offer feature. I've got a few more of these to shift yet, problem is the potential customer only has to look at my completed listings to see I've sold one for 40 odd quid. I was thinking of listing as BIN £100 + Best Offer.

I have never bought anything from auctions in the past year or so. If I can't get it as BIN, I won't waste my time. Call me strange but that's how it works for me I have paid more for the same stuff just to get it quickly rather than wait 3 days till auction ends and STILL lose it to someone else.

Especially in slow moving markets - if there are only few active listings at any given time but NO ONE is offering BIN, guess how to steal those buyers?
Same here first thing I do on eBay is filter for BINs and then sort by price ascending. Check the total price inc shipping and buy the cheapest one.

A hell of a lot of auctions tend to go over someone elses BIN price anyway.

Don't worry, most people will not know or bother about searching completed listings, if they ask simply say it was a one off experiment will taught you an expensive lesson.

Auction format also attracts the cheapskate nuisance buyer (the worst type of ebayer!).

just remember with a 'best offer' listing to set up the auto decline/accept price ranges

I tend to accept a price which is fair to me and at a level where i cant be bothered with manually accepting offers

Most of my auctions are actually BIN at the full price, only a few savvy ebayers try out the best offer route
