Question Does anyone have an Ingram, D&H account?

I know that several people have accounts with authorized Sony Distributors like Ingram Micro, D & H, Jack of All Trades, etc. I also know that these places are considered a huge waste of time. I have heard for example their price on a US version PSP is like $3 under retail.

I was wondering if you can attain discounted pricing at large quantities. I tried to contact them about a quote but they just gave me a sales pitch about how I should sign up and blah, blah, blah.

I would think that if I commited to buying 1000s of units a month through them that I would receive significantly discounted pricing. Can anyone with an account contact their distributor and ask for me? I would greatly appreciate it .

Any other relevant info would be great as well .

Shawn,

I have an account with D and H. I havent bought anything from them either because the prices are too high, or they cant get the product. I will give them a call tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out.

I have an ingram account..

To sum up in as little words as possible...

can you get a quantity break from one of these distributors?

Quick answer, Yes and no..

If your trying to obtain regular product with no quantity break option through ingram, what you pay for one, you will pay the same price for 100 or even 1,000..10,000 at that..

If you are commited to buying more than 1,000 units from one of these distributors, my advice, do not waste your time..Even though you are guaranteed product, unless you have a retail location and charge actual retail price, you will not make any money what so ever..

You can find items that are selling on ingram micro right now, on ebay selling for $100's even $1,000's less than what ingram is offering the product for AT WHOLESALE..

To set up an account with any of these entities, you will first need to register your business with your local county clerk..though it is not necessary...All you really need is to obtain a tax id number from the irs and fill out a reseller agreement with them and pay a $100 fee to get the account rolling..(don't waste your money)

Also, the good product, you will have to be an authorized distributor to even think about purchasing through one of these distributors..Items like cellular phones, computers, laptops, psp's, ipods and such...You have to be an authorized dealer in order to obtain product..Certain products you can purchase without being an authorized dealer like cameras, various accessories for electronics, televisions, etc..

To even think about becomming an authorized dealer through any company, i.e apple, sony, palm one, sprint, nextel, etc., You need to have a physical retail location and be in business at least 2 or 3 years..With financials.. And trade references..A little advice in building credit and trade references, set up a dun and bradstreet account and start building your credit history through them..

So, in a nut shell, can you purchase lots of products and get a break on the price? Yes and no.. Only if the Quantity Break (QB) is advertised as such...Your better off trying to find your own supplier overseas and on the internet..but there is so much fraud and counterfit products running rampid, it's becomming harder and harder to get legit product..

Just wanted to second everything skipcloudwalker said. I have accounts with both DandH and Ingrammicro but they are virtually worthless if you want to sell on ebay or the internet. Ebay is a better wholesale source. They are always backordered on anything good or you have to be an authorized dealer for the good stuff. Hell if I was authorized by Apple why would I need Ingram? I have yet to order from Ingram so that was 100 bucks wasted and I will probably lose my account soon but I see no need to keep it. D and H has a lot of products but unless you have brick and mortar store no need to use them either. Kind of a catch 22...pay high prices and be sure to get products or battle the scammers for better prices. Makes you just want to leave all the electronics to Circuit City, Best Buy and WalMart.

Shawn,

Finally got a return call from the rep at D and H. He said that the quantity absolutely doesnt matter. 1 or 10,000. Exact same price (currently $251 for PSP Value Pack). Said the manufacturers lose money on every game console made. Making it up on licensing for the games. The only thing he did mention was I could get a 2.6% discount if I did not pay with credit card but used wire transfer instead.

Also emailed Sony asking what were the requirements to buy directly from them. They emailed back a list of authorized distributors...D&H, Ingram, a couple others.

I emailed back asking what were the requirements to become an authorized distributor. Basically their response was "we got plenty, thanks but no thanks"

The search continues.....

What most of the internet distributors and others alike actually do, they purchase factory direct..which means, production runs and such..

the product becomes there product...your bank has to be in the 10's -100's of millions of dollars to even think about purchasing factory direct..

and still, it's not just about how much money you have, it's about who you know...and who you get to know..

Becomming an authorized distributor for these companies, you have a contract agreement with them. Meaning, you do not own the product..but you are simply brokering the product directly from the company...and they set their own price..you cannot break that contract or you can kiss your contract goodbye..You can only distribute to authorized resellers that have been authencated through the company..It's a big ol complex chain..

Then you have the large purchasers..Guys that can actually afford to purchase and set up a production run to obtain product at factory direct prices.......They own the product that they purchase from the factory and therefore, can do what they wish with the product and sell at whatever price they desire..Thats why you have lots of internet companies and wholesalers selling for way less than authorized distributors...Undercutting the competition..but the authorized channels have that client base..it's a huge client base..Ingram Micro is worldwide!! Hence, they can afford to make $1 profit from the mark up's that the company contracts the wholesale agreement in which they can sell the product..

One strategy that i don't think anyone has ever tried is to open an account with one of these large distributors where your currency outweighs their currency..Hence, the products are a lot cheaper and in a way can be classified as Gray Market product through authorized channels..

If anyone has ever tried this, hit up this thread with how it's working out for you..are you even allowed to do such a thing?..

If I understand your question, I have tried opening Ingram accounts in Singapore and elsewhere (can't remember now) mentioning that I had an account in US and they never even responded. My thinking is you have to be serviced by your local distribution center.

Thanks for the info Greg...I had always been curious if they were just telling ME that or if they told everyone that. Funny their operations don't work anything like the wholesale suppliers I have had in other trades. There has always been a quantity discount. Oh well...as you said...the search continues.
