Importing to the US is usually a very simple process. If you would like to know before hand if the items you intend to import require a duty or tax to be paid, simply call your local US Customs office. There is one at every major airport in the US. They have agents whose sole job it is to look up the item you are importing and tell you what taxes, if any, are applicable.
Once you know, the shipping carrier handles the rest for you. Fed Ex, DHL, UPS and USPS can collect the payment from you, submit it for you, and handle all relevant paperwork.

You can just ring up HMRC to find out, or get it from their website I think, for the duty on anything you want to import. VAT is applied to almost everything at 17.5%. My shippers (I have used Fedex, UPS and EMS) all bill me automatically for the tax owed on my shipments.

Duty does not apply to some items such as games consoles but VAT is applied to ALL imported goods regardless. Sony or any other manufacturer for that matter does not have any exemptions to this. If you import PS3's you will be charged VAT at 17.5%.

Typically you are responsible for your state's sales tax if you purchase an item anywhere outside your state and do not pay a tax then bring that item into your state for sales/use
Look up "[your state name] sales use tax" on yahoo
