Default Importing To U.S. .... I Called Customs, now what do I do.

Well ive been getting ready to buy overseas and import items into the U.S., I called U.S customs today to find out how much they would charge me in fees to import some designer clothing probably valued at around a 1000usd, they told me so much stuff I didnt understand, they told me there was many duty fees and they werent based on the value of items being imported, so they couldnt tell me around how much I would have to pay. Then they told me that they would need to know everything about the clothing where it was made the type of material and textile the clothing was made out of as in what type of cotton ect. They asked me if I was buying merchandise to resale or personal use, which i didnt even get to answer becuase they told me right away they would know if it was for resale if they saw more than 1 of the same product. They told me I would need to have authorization from the distributor. Then I asked them about video importing video games, same thing that the only way I could import was if I had authorization from the distributor, they told me I couldnt import any sony products if I wasnt authorized. They told me about getting an import broker and that when the broker had everything set up I would be given this 10 digit number and that I could then call customs back with the number and they would tell me how much duty fees I would have to pay.

Is it this difficult, thought I had read somewhere that importing into the U.S. isnt hard at all, do they just make it seem difficult. Some of you all might seem confused by my post but thats exactly how got the information, I dont understand anything about no broker either.

Have any of you based in the U.S imported items as brand name/designer clothing or video games into the U.S.. Would you mind sharing your input on this, or at least what process you all went threw.

Did they mention using paragraphs?

Try a broker, it will save you a lot of grief.
