Default Vat number

I dont earn £64.000 from my business yet but some of the suppliers i am looking at need a vat number to register, what can i do? also how can i register and is it free?

You would have to way up the benefits of regestring, it is free but will often not be of benefit to your company. Just explain to your suppliers that you don't have a VAT number, most will be fine with it.

be aware you don't need to earn 46k you need to have 64k turnover.

Explain this to your suppliers and see what they say, most will be accomadating. if they are not either get another supplier of register for VAT.

My advice regarding VAT is simple..... unless you HAVE to register.... leave it alone

Many want your VAT number to know how to invoice you e.g if you deal with an EU country, they won't charge you VAT if you are registered.

However, if they are asking for a vat number purely for legitimacy checking, offer them your UTR (unique tax reference) which every self employed person should have.
