Default Import books

Hi- I am looking to import books from asia. They are eductaional related books. I was once told that there is no charges on import on books. Is that true? If it isnt, does anyone have ideas on how much the import duty, vat charges would be?

Dependant on the specific content, I believe duty and VAT is 0%.

There is a HMRC guide on printed matter and the duty can be checked on the EU taric pages!

taric is the EU tarrif guide:
http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds/tarhome_en.htm
search for you product, click it, then enter the origin - hey presto - duty rates.

Note: searching for the obvious can be quite a pain!

thanks for the information. What im actually trying to find out is that i know of a specific book which is sold at £135 in the uk. The same book i found out is sold at £30 in india. Now i believe these proces are set for each country so the people can buy it. If i import the book and after all the extra charges if it even comes to £50, i would be happy. But i was once told that there is a restriction on improting these types of books, coz that price is just for that trade block. Is this correct?

Also, any idea on importing medical goods, instruments. Is that allowed?
