Importing Apparel, Clothings to Canada
Hi, I am planning to import jackets and jeans to British Columbia, Canada.
But, I would like to know more about import duties and tax before I import them. Does anyone know how much duties and tax were charge for importing clothes in BC, Canada?
Last time, I bought one shirt from U.S., and Canada Customs charge me 40% duties and 12% tax; that is alot...I bought my shirt for 40USD and end up paying 60USD total....

Hi We export our garments to canada. Last time our buyer in Guelph buy around 1044 USD and What we heard from them they are paying taxes around 138 USD. Hope this helps.
Mainly Import Duty are between 16 to 18 % of total cost.
Best Regards,

I contacted a customs officer; he told me that all apparel goods manufactured outside North America will charge 18% duty and 12% tax.
He told me the way they charge. First, they will convert the currency of the goods into UK dollar if the currency of the goods are not in CAD dollar, then charge 12% tax. After charging the 12% tax, there will be an additional 17.5% duties. Finally, they will then convert the currency back to CAD dollar.

Well, there are damned few clothing items made in North America, maybe some in Mexico that would qualify under NAFTA. hardly anything in the US any longer. So buying from the US you are possibly paying import duties into the US, then again into Canada. Of course, the same is probably true buying from the UK/EU.
