Hi,

I'm totally new to importing anything and have recently imported some goods from China to sell on ebay. I'm just trying this but have sold the items so will probably order some more. I don't have a clue about paying VAT and tax - I wasn't charged anything on the items I ordered and this is only to supplement my income, not my main source of income. Am I supposed to declare that I'm doing this even though I'm only ordering small amounts and should I have paid VAT for customs? Thanks

You'll find that many of your items coming into the country won't get charged VAT/Duty. This can be because customs have missed it, the value is too low or the supplier has altered the invoice details.
However, always plan for paying VAT/Duty, which is 15% + Duty depending on the product.
Purposely evading VAT/Duty is illegal, so watch out.

Also, welcome to the forum.

Also, if you brought them in by DHL, you may still get a VAT / Duty invoice arriving soon - seen them arrive a month later.

What did you buy and in what kind of quantity - may help us to tell you what is likely to happen

hi and welcome, most import items are subject to vat or duty but hardwareheros is probably correct and i am guessing you done by courier, if you do by deepsea then 100% yopur goods go through full customs proceedures so unavoidable i'm affraid

Thanks for your replies. I bought DVD boxsets worth £196 and they were shipped by DHL, what do you think?

I don't think you need pay the tax if the value is small, it seems if the amount exceed $500, DHL will charge a little tax, I am not sure about if the amount changed now, but it's better to ask DHL first.

With the £196 he's paid he would be charged by DHL, as DHL would have to pay the import duty. The last time I checked the item has to be below £18 not to attract any import duty.
