Hi Guys,

I see there had been posts and articles posted here to help understand this vat and import duty issue.
Im looking to read all to help but for the moment and a quick guide, im hoping to buy clothing from china in the worth of 300 pounds.
How much should I be expecting to pay on VAT and duty charges?
Thanks

If you have a look on HMRC's website, you will find 'The Tarrif', from there you will be able to find the specific code for your clothing items, which will tell you the exact duty rate.

I am in a similar scenario, am about to purchase a job lot of 50 mobile phone accessories (all the exact same item) from Hong Kong.

The items are all of rubber, and have contacted HRMC tariff classification office to see the amount I can expect to pay on top of the value: 2.5% duty and then 15% VAT.

The question I have is how do I go about paying this and when? Do I notify HRMC before the item arrives, or when it does, do they ocntact me with a bill? Can anyone help here?

Thanks

It should be like this. The package arrives in UK, than it is handled by costums, they call you "we have you package", you come to collect it and pay duty+vat. That how it work in our country.

It's already been pointed out in this thread how it works in the UK, depending on the courier:

UPS - You pay on the spot before the driver leaves
Parcelforce - They will tell you there is parcel that needs duty paid on it and you will have to go and collect it from your local depot.
DHL - Will deliver your item and bill you anything upto 3 weeks later.
