Re: Am I being conned by UPS
Does look like there's been a mistake. Without the product specifics it's hard to say what rate you would of had to pay, but the standard seems to be around 15% for toys. Which you have obviously paid a lot more than!
I'd cancel the cheque, confirm everything with HMRC first thing tomorrow and then call UPS to dispute it.

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
First thing to do is to query it with UPS!
Find our exactly what the charges are and how they were calculated.

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
Yes if you look at the total charge line I think that the alignment of the type is not correct the "duty" charge probably should line up with the freight Surcharge.

Looks like you have been overcharged, happened to me a number of times with RM & always got a refund when I've given proof of value.

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
Hi all,
I actually phoned up UPS first, this morning to ask what was going on.
I'm new to this 'importing from another country' stuff, so I'm learning as I go.
Basically I was told that the SHIPPING cost is taxed as well. It's not just the $192 for the value of the goods. It's the total of the goods and shipping.
Is this normal?
As I said, I'm new to this, but the concept of having to pay import duties on the value of how much I paid UPS for shipping seems ridiculous.

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
Hello,
Yes it's normal for the shipping cost to be included in the total value that is taxed/VAT is paid on. We normally use DHL, but due to circumstances are having to use UPS for the first time and expecting delivery of a much larger order on Friday so i'll keep you updated with our costs. That £70 odd looks very dodgy and needs to be re-checked (even if shipping is included!)
Warm Regards

How much did your supplier pay to UPS for shipping?

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
I rang up UPS the other day, to get a quote for 80kg worth of goods!
They quoted me £778!
Then I rang an air freight agent, who managed to do the same shipment for £287!
UPS are doing something wrong i think!

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
UPS are infamous for their import charges, I wouldn't dream of using them without an upfront quote of the total costs of using them. I got stung by them a few years back importing a camera from the US, bloody expensive mistake. Never used them again, bunch of ripoff artists.

Re: Am I being conned by UPS
I have a few US suppliers that ship via UPS to me, they've only got it wrong once and it was rectified very quickly/cheque sent out.
Looking at your invoice, the printer is definitely out of alignment and you've been charged VAT and Duties - the VAT is definitely wrong, it should be 15% obviously. The Duty is probably correct, the £11 is their brokerage/handling fee.
Just as an example, I had a $1300 order in via UPS last week and paid around double your VAT charge, Duty was around £110 on that.
Don't cancel the cheque, you'll only cause problems with future shipments to your address.
Call them and ask why you've been charged so much VAT but first check the top right corner for the invoice value + currency, it's possible UPS have entered the wrong value on their system.
