Aussie Taxes.
Hello All;
Any aussie importers like to shed some light about import tax?
Says that the goods must be of worth of over $1,000.
Goods are worth $900USD Which is $995 AUD, but using tranzfers its $1015.
Will this mean ill get taxed?
anything else i should know ?
thanks a bunch

If the goods are below $1000 AUD you will not have any tax to pay.
If the goods are around $1000 AUD customs may hold them and you will be notified by mail that you need to provide proof of payment with costs.

Thanks Mate.
So if im paying for $900 USD worth of stuff, (which is incredibly close to AUD $1000) maybe a bit over.
Will i be taxed?
Since im buying such a small amount the postage is nearly half the order cost, because its being sent my express UPS.

I cannot give you a definate answer that's customs job. What if the exchange rate alters and takes you over the $1000 ? There are a few things you need to take into consideration. Before you place your initial order you need to factor your pricing to include tax, gst, shipping etc.Be prepared to pay !
Remember to keep proof of payment costs because after 5 or 6 days customs will also charge you a storage fee.

Re: Aussie Taxes.
I import items with UPS often, and generally import values when converted into Australian dollars are over estimated, so chances are you will end up paying the GST on your order.
Generally with UPS, they will deliver the item to your door as usual, but when the item arrives, they will bill you the import fees (in your case roughly $100), and you will be required to settle the debt with the UPS driver before you can receive your goods.
Hope this helps,
Greg

Hi Greg,
Under valued, over estimated is against the law.The/your payment in $AUD is there concern. Not USD or Euro's.
Why would he only end up paying the gst and not the tax for the goods imported ?
Customs can and will hold goods whether delivered by UPS or Charlie Chang Couriers.
I stressed in my OP he must keep proof of payment costs because if customs do stop the delivery this is one of the things they will need confirming.Time WILL incur storage fee's.They will also advise him to use a shipping agent which is not necessary .

I usually get goods imported into the country, and their invoice value is in another currency (Usually USD). The currency conversion rate is usually over estimated. Ive usually import items into Australia that have a converted AUD value of $991 yet, when they reach Australian borders, they will still get charged, even if the currency has depreciated slightly.
I agree completely with what you said above in relation to importing goods in general, but, what i said above was related to UPS only. UPS, as a courier company will pay your import fees on your behalf when your item reaches australian borders. They then charge you for it when they arrive at your door to deliver your items. They act as your agent, which allows the order to be delivered in a timely manner. I have been using them for 3 years for express imports and have never had an order held by customs.

Re: Aussie Taxes.
Unfortuently, if you get charged GST, it will be on the entire amount, not the amount over $1000.

Chris, They probably won't even pick it up. I import 5k a month and have never been charged GST.
