It's not easy to close shops, in fact it's harder. You still have the associated costs with retail and not just as simple as shutting up.
If you are still paying rent, rates, electricity, insurance etc, you are better to have people coming through the door contributing (in way of sales). Sure you will cut costs by probably 50% but that still would not be enough. If things were so dire, they should have tried off load the shops,
which no doubt they would have tried months ago. I can imagine the business hit a brick wall. Small margins and less sells = good night.
To shut a chain of shops takes considerable time and short term greater expense.
