I think it would cost you a lot less to produce a prototype in china other then UK.

It is not worth getting a prototype done in China IMHO, it will be out the back door and in full production before you even got the first one back.
You don't really need to know the product to the post above ^
Speak to your local Uni, I think the one near me offers some kind of service and their equipment is the dogs wotsits.

If you go to the uni then they should help you, the one at my local is funded by a private company so is slightly different but the guy that runs it was mega helpful as I am sure people at other unis will be.
Don't know if they would want to take a % of future profits etc, probably only would if they helped you develop it.
Any hint at what it is?

In my experience, depending what it is there is quite a lot involved getting to prototype stage. If you just want to create a dummy product (no internals etc), it is worth employing a designer who can create a presentation (preferably rendered 3d).
You can use these as your selling point or go one step further and have a model produced. The latter can be very expensive however if you aew looking to seriously sell the product it, it is essential.
If the product is electrical then you will need an electronics wizzard to produce a working prototype. This should have been first on the list to make sure it is viable. It does not have to be fancy. I've had a prototype mounted in a buscuit tin before! But at least it could be tested to the point of almost breaking it.
The information you require is so indepth, it ultimately depends on what you have 'invented' as to what method you use.
Finally there is no shortcuts. Launching a brand new type product is a very long winded process and can usually take years just to get to the pre-manufacturing stage.
A new type of controller for the PS2 bundled with a game launched by a small UK company took 6 years and about £1M just to get a pre-production model. That will give you an idea of the scope.
Good luck.
