Default E3 08: Sony backing 80GB PS3 in US

Quote:
Platform holder to phase out the 40GB model, though it’s unknown what this could mean for Europe

Sony made an important announcement regarding its PS3 hardware strategy at last night’s E3 conference, confirming that from September its focus would be laid solely on its 80GB model.

The hardware will drop from $499 (as it was in the MGS4 bundle) to $399 and will replace the existing 40GB machine (currently priced at $399).

It will also, according to Sony boss Jack Tretton, offer “the current functionality of the 40GB PS3” – a statement that most people take to mean it will lack the PS2 backwards compatibility and card reader of the 60GB model.

What this all means for Europe remains to be seen. After launching with a 60GB model including backwards compatibility, four USB ports and an integrated card reader in 2007, this model was soon replaced with the lower spec 40GB machine.

We’ve contacted Sony to see if Europeans can expect the 80GB machine to arrive on these shores any time soon.

Hmmm guess the 80gb not going to be released in UK this winter

it doesn't matter any more.....
FF13 is no PS3 exclusive anymore....
PS3 will release FF13 in Japan, and Xbox360 wil release FF13 in EU and U.S....
No matter what PS3 does.....it's just not attractive enough.........

Do you really need that much space for storing game data? (sorry, I'm not a gamer )

Nope but people will buy them anyway

£299 RRP for 80gb model console only - bundles should be out around Xmas.

Not making or sending out anymore 40gb models so lets hope they have enough of these ready for Xmas as for the 40gb left they are not lowering the prices.

Way the idiots go on that evil auction site for the 40 and 60gb models you could probably get a grand a piece for these

Not really no, but you can store music, videos and downloaded games as well.

I had a 80gb Ps3, and I used 45gb already for game data and movie trailers. Another 5gb were PS3 system data. So.. I think..... yah.... U need that space.....

The thing is though, a PS3 would be better in the long run because of it having blu-ray. DVD is going to vanish within the next few years because of HD televisions. And since blu-ray will be replacing DVDs the obvious choice would be to buy a PS3.
