It's official, apple have released the iphone 3G unlocked in Hong Kong!

No, because the PAYG iphones are still effectively 'locked' to O2.

But also the ones from O2 are £350 for the 8GB, everyone knows the UK pays over the top for everything. Should be some good prices coming out of Hong Kong soon.

Edit: Just reead the article and it looks like they are more expensive than in the UK...

And this is news how? Most of Europe has already had them unlocked and from what I know from forums like MacRumors Hong Kong have had them unlocked since release date the person that wrote the article is obviously a bit late to the party.

Yes Officially it has always been unlocked, there was a page on Apple.com about which countries have the iPhone and whether or not it is unlocked, Hong Kong has 3 & unlocked.

It's illegal to lock phones in certain EU countries.

I was speaking to a friend who is still in the industry and there is a possibility Orange may get the iPhone too if o2 don't hit their connection/sales targets. However I have a strong feeling o2 are over target with 50K of iphones a week being sold in the UK!
