Warranty Question?
Hi all,
I'm not sure if I have chosen the most appropriate section to post this question so I apologise if not.
I am just trying to get started in wholesale buying and selling online and have a question I was wondering if anyone could help with a little advice.
I am interested in selling named brand watches with a retail value between £100 and £200 initially. This is partly because, being a watch collector myself, I will not only have an interest in the products I am selling, but also, a certain amount of knowledge in the field.
I believe I have managed to find a good trustworthy wholesaler to begin with but I'm curious about how none authorised dealers cope with the issue of warranty? Manufacturers such as Seiko for example offer a two year warranty as long as the warranty card has been stamped by an authorised Seiko dealer. Obviously I am not and never will be an authorised dealer and so I was wondering how others get around this problem?
I have seen watches of a similar kind on sale on sites such as eBay where the seller is selling the watch with 12 months warranty. I am a bit confused by this, would he be personally offering the warranty or would this be somehow through the manufacturer? I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't be authorised dealers.
Has anyone any ideas or information/experience with this situation? I really don't feel that I would like to offer a personal 12 month warranty for a watch!
Thanks guys for any help you can give me,
Russ

Re: Warranty Question?
Hi
Most items come with a manufacturer's warranty but I suppose you could always guarantee a warranty and fix and resolve any problems yourself.

Re: Warranty Question?
You could try looking at the wholesalers terms and conditions regarding faulty products.
If someone receives a faulty watch, you send them a new one and the broken one you receive back can be sent back to the manufacturer or wholesaler.

Re: Warranty Question?
As above most products will have a 12 month manufacturers guarantee. If not you will have to offer a back to base guarantee but this means you will be responsible for repairs/replacements during this period.
If you wanted to offer a 2 year guarantee you could use the manufacturers guarantee for the first year (if it has one) and your own guarantee for the second year.

Re: Warranty Question?
Thanks for your replies,
I am planning on selling the watches with something like a 7 day return policy where as a buyer could return a watch for any reason as long as it was returned exactly as sent with in the 7 day period. It is the longer term warranty I am more concerned about.
I am under the impression (unless someone can tell me different) that unless the warranty card has been stamped by an authorised dealer, the watch will have zero warranty.
I really dont feel that I could offer a personal 12 month warranty for every watch sold. I am not a watch maker and do not have any contacts for cheap watch repairs. I think by going down the route of offering a personal warranty, I could end up digging myself into more problems and expence than it would be worth. I know that brands such as Seiko are of very good quality and should not need many repairs within 12 months but you just never know, and I would imagine repairs could be costly.
I'm sure other people must be in the same situation with not only watches but other items with the same sort of manufacturers warranty requirements?
Thanks again to you all for your advice and interest in my problem,
Russ

Re: Warranty Question?
Hello Russ. With most other guarantees on items, there wont be the need for a stamped warranty card as needed by your watch manufacturers. Which makes it a bit of an unusual situation. Any luck with any information on your suppliers website? If not its probably best to drop them an email to see where you stand with them.

Re: Warranty Question?
If you are going to be selling on eBay they have some great advice in the 'help' section.
Just type 'returns policy' in the help search box. If you read all the way down there is a section on warranties and guarantees.
This info would be correct selling anywhere so probably worth a look anyway.

I tried typing 'returns policy' into eBay's help search as you suggested but I can't seem to find the section on warranties and guarantees you mention.
When I type it in, it brings up 7 pages of sections but warranties and guarantees isn't one of them. Is it actually in a section of its own?
I haven't as yet found any helpful information from the supplier. I'll send them an email as you suggest and see what they suggest with the situation. I'm sure there must be a solution to this.
Thanks guys,
Russ

Re: Warranty Question?
Once you have searched for 'returns policy' the third link down is 'legal guidance for business sellers'
Thats the one you need.
