Along with similar concepts in business like the ones already stated, i would say:
"If you want a job doing, do it yourself!
DO NOT rely on others to do the work/judgements for you. This isnt to say you should not employ people etc ...i mean do not read things on the internet etc and think that this correct, try to make a lot of the inquires, contact with the suppliers or whatever yourself.

Or as Seth Godin put it:
Persistence isn't using the same tactics over and over. That's just annoying.
Persistence is having the same goal over and over.

In some businesses, its a must esp public liability. If you hold a lot of high value stock, don't chance it.

think outside the box
live outside the box
be aware of the sheep but dont join them... lead them
always make a profit
dont mistake turnover with profit
look at what a thing is but imagine what it could be
never trust a bank, a loan company or the tax man
cash is king
money is a tool.... dont let it sit around gathering dust..... use it
you can only play the cards you are dealt...... so make sure...... your the dealer

The most important thing you need in business in my opinion is good instinct.
If you dont have that then try these.
Keep you overheads to a minimum.
Dont give credit.
Dont try to run before you can walk.
Dont put all your eggs in one basket.

Forgot one rule that I now live by. It is something EVERYONE should consider very carefully when deciding how to set up a business. Another thread regenerated the memory in my head of gloomy times in the past and I can't believe I haven't mentioned it already in this thread.
PARTNERSHIPS are not to be entered into lightly (and no, I don't mean marriage although, surprisingly, the same rule applies). There will be differences of opinion, who gets the most profit share, why were you in at ten this morning when I have been in at half seven every morning, you take too many holidays, who hires, who fires, who signs the cheques - one or both?
Its a bloomin minefield and, god forbid, what if your partner decides to empty the bank account one day just before the wages are due for the staff?
Think about it carefully noobs! is it worth the risk - what DOES a partnership bring to the table?
