you don't buy the stock, just the option to in the future at a set time for a much lower price. If the stock goes up, you make money. If it doesn't do anything before the option expires, you lose the cost of the option. I don't know a lot about it, but it sounds interesting
CFDs and spread betting has taken over from options. Same story really, just easier to understand.

If it was me, I'd buy a Glass's Guide, buy a car for £700, spend £100 on it (valet, a mop, new mats and new MOT), park it at the end of the road with a for sale sign and sell it for £1400 quid.
