Do I need a CE Mark to sell in the UK?
Hi All,
Have got my first pair of bicycle handlebars coming over from Taiwan.
However, I want to sell these in the UK and Europe.
Question is, do I need a CE mark before I can sell them to end users?
If so, how do I go about it? I have just emailed the supplier asking therm if they already have a CE mark...
Any advice greatly appreciated
Paul

Probably, yes!
Almost everything now needs CE certification. This means that the item conforms to relevant safety regulation.
If thesupplier cant help, you are best speaking to a test lab, like ITS or similar.

I think customs can seize them if they are not CE marked if they are inspected going through customs.

Here's the UK Bicycle Association website http://www.ba-gb.com and the British Standards Institution website http://www.bsigroup.com/
They will have the information for the safety requirements certification.

Dear all, thanks for your comments, obviously a lot if big brains out there!
I am still to hear back from the manufacturer, but the product has now arrived and looks great!
I am also importing a chair from china. I know I have to conform with safety regs for flame-retardant...etc...
How do I prove this? My supplier can use flame retardant material, but do I as a seller have to have documentation to prove my compliance?? Hopefully not another CE mark!

Hi all, got this repsonse from the manufacturer re the handlebars:
(EN14781. include stem and bar tension test, loaded=450N(2.34Kg/cm2) &
loaded=600N(3.12Kg/cm2), test circles=100000. max frequency=25Hz).
I'm sorry for most of our products are not come with CE stickers because we
provide the EN test reports that is enough. I don't know if the UK market
policies require the CE mark ?
Is EN testing enough? Aren't these the test reqd for the CE mark?

It is a European requirement that all (relevant) products must be CE marked, to indicate compliance to relevant technical specs.
If they are tested to, and meet, the relevant EN regs, they should have no reason not to add the CE mark.

Thanks Consultant.
The manufacturer has sent me 4 word docs with photos of tests and Chinese writing as proof (!) Should I ask to see a certificate of some sort? I was expecting some time of official certificate, but after seeing this link:
http://www.cemarking.net/alura_xl_co...FQOuFQodlCTmFA
It says that many companies can self-cert as long as they make sure the product meets the requirements stipulated in the necessary directives. Once these tests are complete, the data or proof must be kept on file. I would then need to issue a 'Declaration of Conformity' on my packaging. This would explain the lack of a posh-looking certificate.
If these test docs are indeed legitimate, can you advise me on whether I have to 'apply' for a CE mark now, or do I just get some CE stickers added or painted onto the bars before sale?
Has anyone had any experience of self-certing a CE mark and keeping their own findings on file?
Thanks
Paul
