Default New here. need some help getting started.

Whats up guys im glad i found this site. i recently lost my job at ford motor company here in Detroit, michigan so im looking for an alternative source of income. I know alot of people around here so i have a pretty reasonable amount of costumers that could get the word out, but im not exactly sure what i wanna start into. I know alot of people that would like the New Era fitted hats, nike shoes, and also athentic sport jerseys. Ive been up all night reading about how china imports arent the best idea. i also read into tradekey.com and im not 100% where to start out at.my buddy is amazing at building websites and that sort of thing so i have people to help out there. I was also wondering if i need a licence if im just a buyer but i sell it here? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what you are going to need to do business in Michigan.

You need to go here and get a MI sales tax account -
http://www.michigan.gov/uia/0,1607,7...9978--,00.html

You will need this if you sell anything within MI. You may also need it to prove you have a business when you go to buy wholesale.

You may also need a local business license. You can call your local city / town / whatever hall and ask about that.

You should get a separate business checking account. Check around some banks now offer them free.

That will get you started. And legal.

Be honest. They have the right to come in and inspect your records at any time.

You will pay NO taxes when buying goods. Once you sign with them you get an exemption number that you can give to suppliers that allows you to buy without paying sales tax.

You must COLLECT sales tax on any sales in Michigan - unless whoever you sell to provides YOU with THEIR exemption number. You must have a copy of their exemption or file, or collect the tax. This costs you nothing, you simply pass on what you collect, keeping a tiny amount for your trouble.

BUT, if you do not collect when you should have, then YOU will owe anyhow. If you make a sale in MI and do not collect the tax and do not have an exemption - you are liable for the tax.

Sales outside MI are not taxable. You can sell anywhere else in the world and you are OK. Just sales within MI.

Of course, if you make any profits, they are taxable as income, just like your earnings from Ford. Whole different deal. You would own income tax no matter how you get that.

In my area Ford just closed down a whole plant. Been making pickups for years, just shut her down. Years ago I used to sell truck parts to NuCar Carriers who were hauling the stuff out for them at the time. Of course, the car haulers are gone too, as well as a lot of warehouse and parts hauling operations. A real shame.
