Default New Business Advice

Hi guys,

I've only just found these Forums and I am so glad I did! There is so much great information here and it looks like a lot of friendly members too! I can't wait to read through the rest of the forums.

Anyway, I thought I would post a thread here for a bit of advice as I'm looking to start a new online business.

I've been interested in web development for quite a few years and I've run a few websites, making money from adverts. So I've always seen the potential to make money online. Recently, I realised that even though high street sales are falling and shops are closing, internet sales are rising. So it looks like it would be a great time to start an online business, if I'm right.

Me and my dad are both interested in starting an online business together. He has a lot of knowledge about the running of a business as he ran a small maintainence business before and with my knowledge of website development, I think we would make a good team.

At the moment I'm researching as much as I can into the set up and running of an online business. And also thinking about what kind of products I could sell as well as a name/brand for our website.

My plan to get the business started up is:
1. Decide on what we're going to sell.
2. Decide on a name/brand for the website.
3. Get the website made and setup.
4. Find and buy the stock from wholesalers.
5. Register as a sole trader (in the future becoming a limited company).

Does anyone have any advice and tips for us about any aspect of the setup and running of the business?
Anything will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
James

Hi James,

Welcome to the community. You sound as if you have spent quite a bit of time researching your plan of action so really now its about getting out there and on with it. The best advice we can offer (at least in the general form you have asked for) is to spend a lot of time absorbing the information that's already been made available to you here on the community.

Anything more specific, do give us a shout.

Best of luck with it. We look forward to seeing you progress in your business endeavours.

Personally I think you shoul find supliers before you open a website as then you can have money coming in as soon as you open instead of looking for suppliers for a couple of months and wasting money paying for hosting as finding supliers is not a case of google searching.

G'day...you and me both have the same idea and the same goals. The difference between me and you is I Know what I want to sell.
My idea is to become a trader in products that I like. That i admire and know about.
An online merchant sounds good.
Unlike you I have only just started to research as to how to do this. A web-site sounds good. To me weblogs also have appeal. After all blogs are free (mostly) and a lot of them look like websites.
I am still making up my mind enjoying reading books about it all.
couple more months I reckon I might have a bit more knowledge
I used to run a business importing and wholesaling
